Student Research Seminars
Students will a topic of interest from history. Time will be allocated in class for research, and HAND WRITTEN rough NOTES will be an ESSENTIAL component. Research seminars require students to detail the importance of an event and to provide a clear explanation of its importance in a historical context.
Essays should be 3-4 pages (approx 750-1000 words) in length, and they will adhere to Chicago style guidelines. Students should consult 4-5 reliable sources and should have at least one footnote / reference per page. Get started by choosing a narrowed subject to research. When writing your essays, you need to quote from other sources in order to show you've actually done research. You may paraphrase and cite at times, but you can also work your sources' wordings into your own context to show your writing brilliance. A LACK of quotes and embedded citations is an immediate warning that you are not including all the information you should. Rough drafts will be written IN CLASS. After peer editing, these will be typed in order to be edited and graded by the teacher. Proper Chicago formatting and structure will be expected by this time! Full citations and appropriate use of quotations, etc. will be required. Additionally students will prepare a 10-15 minute presentation using a variety of media (ex. Google slides, prezi, video). Student engagement is encouraged through games, quizzes, discussion, etc. Please see rubrics to the right. |
