Choosing a Career

Life Map
Life Map Assignment
A life map is visual that celebrates the major events in your life so far, the major events that you would like to have happen in the future, and significant hopes for your future career. For our purposes, you will map out your life leading to a future career you would like to pursue. It can look like an actual map, a treasure map, an electronic format, a timeline or any way you choose to format it. It is up to you!

• Art piece
• Rap / song

Below is a list of events and symbols/drawings/pictures/representations that should be included on your map.
Life Map Checklist
Include the following things on your life-map. Feel free to add to the list if you would like to include more!
Birth information: Full name, date of birth, hospital, city, province, country
First home: Where you first lived (city, province, country, years lived there)
First school: Name of school, city, province, country, age you attended
Elementary school: Name of school, city, province, country, age you started there
High school: Name of school, city, province, country, age you started
Major life event that has already happened #1: Include the year it happened, what happened, age you were when this happened and how you were affected by the event
Major life event that has already happened #2: Include the year it happened, what happened, and age you were when it happened
A description of a person who has inspired you/influenced your life.
Post-secondary: Name of school, city, province, country, what you will study
Career: What you will do, what you want to do
Where you will live
Future major life event #1 (after school): Include the year it happens, what happens, age you are when this happens
Future major life event #2 (after school): Include the year it happens, what happens, age you are when this happens
One other event of your choice
Requirements:
• Title
• Quote representation (include a quotation by a person, or from a movie, book, etc. that summarizes your life)
• Map format (electronic/paper)
• Write up (minimum 2 sentences about each event), included on the life map.
• Includes all the information from the checklist
Marks:
1.Graphical Design - Can the reader/viewer navigate through your life with this map?

2. Life Content - Are there significant “Events” that have propelled you to a certain direction (to your career choice)?
5 marks
3.Temporal Dimension - Has time been fast or slow? Or does it “bridge” from one part of your life to another?
3 marks
4. Physical/Geographical/Thematic Dimension - Does geography play a role? Or is there another theme?
2 marks
5. Clarity and Completeness - Have you provided the reader/viewer with a clear and concise map of your life until this point, and towards your future career? Have you included write-ups for each event on the life map? Have you completed all points on the checklist?

Writing a Formal / Business Letter
Read "Reconciliation or Conciliation? An Inuit Perspective" by John Amagoalik (Speaking My Truth: Reflections on Reconciliation and Residential School) and watch the video below before writing a formal letter to the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Explain how you feel money should be spent by the government in the future.
Preparing your Interview (Primary Research)
When preparing questions for your interview, keep in mind that the person you are speaking with is unique and the career you have chosen may require extra research and planning.
Transcribe your Interview for your Final Report
Preparing a transcript simply means you are recording the information you discussed in your interview. You need to complete this in a particular format, however, and must include key information and details. Open the link below to view guidelines. See this example as one model.
ISU FINAL REPORT
Earlier in the year you chose a career of interest which you would like to pursue. You have completed an interview with someone in this career. Complete further secondary research which you may need in order to prepare a formal report which details what you have learned about this career.
Reports should be about 3-5 pages in length and should use MLA format; the report may use headings, graphics, tables, etc if required however. See below for further details about report writing.
